Are You A Hamster?

Leadership Coaching is not for hamsters, so let’s find out whether you’re a hamster.

There’s a never-ending ‘to do’ list on your desk, you’re running late for meetings, there’s a back-up of voicemails; and you’re not even sure when you’ll have chance to grab lunch in-between everything. This is your daily life, and the thought of adding more ‘goals’ to it is not that appealing to you. If this sounds like you, then you are probably a hamster.

Everyday ‘life’ has a habit of overshadowing our actual goals and forcing us to leave them behind. It tricks us into thinking that we’ll ‘get around’ to those goals ‘someday’. It makes us feel so ‘busy’ that it becomes easy to just ignore our true goals, and carry on. The problem with this is that if we let everyday life have the upper hand, we remain stuck on the hamster wheel focussing only on the everyday distractions that suck us in.

If you’re happy on your hamster wheel that’s ok. You can stay there and keep going round and round. There’s nothing wrong with that, but let me ask you this; “if in 5 years, your life were exactly the same as it is now, would you be happy?” If the answer is yes, then I’ll save you some time in your busy schedule – you won’t need to read the rest of this blog-series.

If your answer is ‘no’, then congratulations, you may not be a hamster after all! By answering ‘no’, you’ve recognised that the life you’re living right now is not necessarily the one you want to be living in the next few years. Well done you!

COACHING QUESTIONS – You can do these in your head, on a piece of paper, or even leave a comment below.

1. Where do you want to be 6 months from now?

2. How will you get there?

What do you think?
